

Sue received a B.S. degree from Hollins College, a Master’s degree from Vanderbilt University, and a doctorate degree from the College of William and Mary. She served as a high school mathematics and physics teacher at Covington, Virginia, and at James Blair High School in Williamsburg, Virginia. She then taught for over twenty years at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia.
Sue was a member of First Christian Church in Hampton, Virginia. An avid bridge player, she was a member of the Duplicate Bridge Club and achieved the level of Life Master at Duplicate Bridge.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Dr. James D. Lawrence, Jr. Survivors include Ted Hall, a cousin in Kentucky; two sisters-in-law, Jean Miller of Norfolk and Anne Bruton and her husband, James, of Portsmouth; nephews, David Lilley and his wife, Jane, William Lilley, and Joseph Lilley, all of Newport News; great-nephew, John Lilley; and great-niece, Elizabeth Lilley.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Monday, June 16, at First Christian Church, 1458 Todds Lane, Hampton, Virginia, with Rev. Marcia Fuson officiating. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the church prior to the funeral. Following the burial, a reception will be held at Sue’s home at 16 Carroll Drive, Poquoson, Virginia.
The family suggests that donations be made to the Humane Society.
