

Edwin S. Moriarty, age 84, passed away on Thursday, October 17, 2013. Ed was a native of Pittsburgh, PA and a resident of Hampton for 55 years. He was a 1953 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. After graduation he reported to the USS MISSISSIPPI (EAG 128) in Norfolk. In 1955 he went to New London to attend Submarine School and in December reported to the USS DIABLO (SS479). He was on DIABLO until 1958 when he resigned. During this time he was designated “Qualified in Submarines.” July 1958 was the start of two new careers. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding in 1992. Throughout the almost 34 years there, most of the time was involved in submarine construction. It was particularly rewarding to be the Submarine Construction Project Manager during the height of the 688 Class building program. He remained on drill status in the Naval Reserve until 1978. During the over 20 years of drilling he held various jobs, including Commanding Officer of a Large Reserve Unit, Group Commander of a Naval Reserve Group, and Operations Officer, CINCLANT Reserve Detachment. While he was assigned to CINCLANT, he was promoted to Captain USNR. During his naval career he received numerous awards, and was most proud and honored after receiving the “Defense Meritorious Service” medal.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Joan F. Moriarty; brother, Richard W. Moriarty and David Hairhoger; son, Edwin J. Moriarty and wife Elizabeth; daughter, Amy M. Anderson and husband Robert; granddaughters, Sarah A. Quitaro and husband Joshua, and Emily A. Brown and husband Wesley; grandson, Edwin Scott Moriarty II and wife Sabra; great-grandson, Brandon R. Quitaro; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:00 pm on Sunday, October 20, 2013 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A celebration of Edwin’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 21, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.
