Evelyn G. Corey, 78, a native of Williamston, North Carolina, and Hampton resident for the past 50 years, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2014. She was the daughter of Fate and Hattie Roebuck of Williamston, NC and was one of twelve children.
Evelyn’s family included her nine brothers (Sam, Johnny, Fate Junior, Simon, Julius, Mickey, Jimmy, Larry, and Earl) and her two sisters (Grace and Thelma). Her surviving brothers and sisters are living throughout the country, including the States of California and North Carolina.
Mrs. Corey was preceded in death by her daughter, Laurie Jo, who died in 1964 at the age of six as a result of complications suffered from a playground accident on Langley Air Force Base. Mrs. Corey never forgot her unusually bright and promising daughter who was getting ready to enter school in the fall of 1964. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Edwin Corey. She is survived by her two sons, Glenn Corey and Greg Corey and his wife, Tish, all of Yorktown, Virginia. Her surviving grandchildren include Elyse Mooney and her husband Chris, Nicole Pavlich and her husband Paul, Noel Corey, Ryan Corey, and Adam Corey.
Mrs. Corey loved her three children and the challenge of raising them as an Air Force family. She enjoyed visiting with her large family, playing board games, and cooking. She brought her country cooking lessons from North Carolina to Hampton, Virginia so that her family could have a taste of home. She always enjoyed beating her two sons in a rousing game of Scrabble. In her teen years, she also enjoyed sports and was starting forward for Coach Maynard on the Williamston High School women’s basketball team.
