Gussie Jacocks passed away at the home of Jon and Ann Jacocks in Thousand Oaks, CA on Friday, December 18, 2020. She had celebrated her 98th birthday three days earlier and died peacefully in her sleep.
Born into a large family in Ayden, North Carolina in 1922, Gussie was primarily raised by a single mother and her older sisters after the death of her father when she was very young. She never forgot this as she always provided a home and care for her extended family. Gussie’s character built of perseverance led her to put herself through college, and she graduated from Radford University with a degree in home economics.
While teaching in the Norfolk, Virginia school system, she completed course work at Virginia Tech in nutrition to work as a hospital dietician in Portsmouth and Hampton, Virginia. She met her husband, Wilbur Jacocks in Portsmouth and they married in 1951. Wilbur and Gussie formed a strong team in their contracting business, operating in Hampton until retirement in 1978. Plans for a waterfront home on the Rappahannock River were put on hold when Wilbur suffered a debilitating stroke. Gussie persisted once again, and completed the house in 1995, which they enjoyed together until Wilbur’s death in 2000. Gussie maintained residence in Tappahannock or with her sons and their families in Richmond, VA and Thousand Oaks, CA.
Gussie is survived by her sons, Henry Jacocks (Barbara) of Richmond, VA and Jon Jacocks (Ann) of Thousand Oaks, CA. She formed a special bond with her six grandchildren: Jeremy Jacocks (Katie) of Calabasas, CA, Caitlin McAdorey (John) of Atlantic-Highlands, NJ, Laura Cushnie (Ross) of Richmond, VA, Jonathan Jacocks, of Seattle, WA, Ross Jacocks of Thousand Oaks, CA, and Andrew Jacocks of Los Angeles, CA; and three great-grandsons: William, Gus and Simon.
There will be a private burial at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton, VA 23666.
Arrangements are under the care of Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave., Hampton, VA 23666.
