Nécrologie de Hilma "Mammy" Clatterbaugh
Hilma “Mammy” Clatterbaugh was born on October 18, 1933 in the small mountain town of Cleveland, Virginia, where she grew up with her sister, Wilma Smith Hale, surrounded by their parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and life-long friends. Mammy attended Johnston Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Abingdon, Virginia where she earned her RN degree. She also met her husband of 49 years, Tom Clatterbaugh, in Abingdon, before settling in Hampton. Mammy continued in her career as a RN, in addition to being known as the “Bethel Park Nurse” for family and friends. Mammy never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew her. She loved to laugh and enjoyed many hobbies which included reading, playing cards, working crossword puzzles, sewing, crafting, and attending auctions. She was a Red Hat Lady and active Bunko player. Cooking shows were her favorite and she made many recipes, always making sure to “doctor it up”. Mammy was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Thomas Clatterbaugh, and her grandson, Brian Michael Shortt. She is survived by her sister, Wilma Smith Hale; daughter, Ann Shortt (David); two sons, William Thomas Clatterbaugh (Trudy), James Allan Clatterbaugh; three grandchildren, Sherin Dee Linsley (Micah), Michael David Shortt (Ashley), Janie Clatterbaugh Hunter (William); five great-grandchildren, Blake Thomas Linsley, Tanner Benjamin Linsley, Morgan Elaine Shortt, Mikaela Ann Shortt, and Josephine Jane Hunter; close cousin, Nancy Morgan (John); nephews; and lots of extended family and loved ones. The family wishes to express our sincere appreciation to Mammy's caregivers:Heather, Denna, and Ashleigh, who faithfully provided home care to assist the family. We would like to extend another sincere appreciation to Personal Touch Home Care for all of their support. A celebration of life service will be held Thursday, May 26, 2022, at 6:00 PM at Calvary Assembly of God, 1380 N Mallory Street, Hampton, Virginia; visitation to follow the service. A private burial will be held on Friday at Parklawn Memorial Park. Service will be officiated by Pastor David Highlander and Reverend Ernest L. Trueblood. The Mallory Street, I64 exit, will be closed from 3-6pm daily. Due to construction closures and traffic concerns, we recommend taking the Mercury Blvd exit.
