Daniel was born on September 11, 1984, at the Moody Air Force Base Hospital in Valdosta, Georgia, to Jim Frishkorn and Karen Pate. From the age of five, he developed a lifelong passion for wrestling that would shape much of his life and legacy.
At Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, Virginia, Daniel became a four-time Virginia High School State Champion and graduated as the state’s winningest wrestler with a then-record 182 career wins. Over the course of his high school career, he earned two Junior National Freestyle All-American honors, won the 2002 Ironman and Beast of the East Championships, and was nationally ranked #1 in his weight class by Amateur Wrestling News, Wrestling USA Magazine, and WIN Magazine. His senior year was especially outstanding, as he won the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic, was selected to the USA Dream Team, won the NHSCA Senior National title at 130 lbs, received the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award, and was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Daniel earned a full scholarship to Oklahoma State University, where he continued to excel both athletically and academically. As a redshirt freshman, he became an NCAA All-American, placing 4th at the national championships. He was also an Academic All-American and a two-time member of OSU’s NCAA National Championship wrestling team. Brain surgery during his redshirt sophomore year brought an end to his competitive wrestling career and his dream of winning an individual national title. After recovering, he completed his degree in Microbiology from Oklahoma State University.
Daniel dedicated the next 15 years to education, most recently serving as a high school science teacher. He had a remarkable gift for connecting with and inspiring special needs students. His love for wrestling continued through coaching, where he taught his athletes the importance of respecting parents and teachers, excelling in the classroom, and working hard on the mat.
Away from the mat, Daniel cherished time outdoors—hunting, fishing, and crabbing. His resilience, kindness, dedication to mentoring, and passion for wrestling will remain an enduring part of his legacy.
Daniel is survived by his father, Col. (ret.) James Frishkorn (Mei-Ling); his mother, Karen (Richard) Pate; one sister, Kristin (Glenn) Starcher; and four brothers: Jordan Frishkorn, Michael (Ashley) Pate, Sam Swanton, and Max Frishkorn. He is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Barbara Frishkorn; maternal grandmother, Loretta Day; nieces and nephew Dreama, Grace, and Chance Starcher; and many other loving family members and friends.
Arrangements are being handled by Parklawn-Wood Memorial Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at Temple Baptist Church (1322 George Washington Hwy N., Chesapeake, VA, 23323).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that Daniel’s legacy be honored by supporting the next generation of wrestlers. Donations may be made to the Great Bridge Wrestling Club at www.greatbridgewrestlingclub.com/shop/DONATION
