

Hampton - John Wallace Carter Jr. died Jan 9, 2025 at Riverside Hospital. Born in Newport News, he was a native of Hampton and had been a Peninsula resident all his life. An avid Amateur Radio Operator, he held the call sign of K4OGT.
Mr. Carter retired in 1993, from Newport News Shipbuilding, as an Engineering Supervisor, after more than 44 years of service. He was a 1948 graduate of Hampton High School and in 1949 entered the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School, graduating in 1956 after serving 3 years in the US Army at Ft. Monroe and in Europe.
He traveled all over the world with musical groups. He was a long time member of the Hampton Lions Jug Band and played with other area bands, including the Wally Carter Quartette and the Lyrics. Wally also enjoyed many years as a Ham Radio Docent, as well as a Museum Docent, at the Virginia Air and Space Center in Hampton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Marston Carter; a son John Wallace Carter III; parents, John Wallace and Katie Wilkins Carter; and a sister Jean Carter Ashford.
Survivors include his daughters Sherry Sanders (Scottie) of York County; and Susan Leuquire (Mark), of Cheyenne, WY; his grandsons Paul (Laura) and David (Kathryn) Sanders and Jacob and Jared (Francesca) Leuquire; 3 great grandchildren; and brother Dennis W. Carter of Raleigh, NC.
Visitation will be at 2:00 on Monday, January 20 at Parklawn- Wood Funeral home. Inurnment will follow at 3:00 at Parklawn-Wood Memorial Park
