

A proud trailblazer and patriot, Sgt. Stewart served honorably in the United States Air Force as a flight engineer and aircraft mechanic. In 1955, he made history as the first Black Flight Engineer on the C 118 at McGuire Air Force Base, later honored in 2007 with the plaque, “First in the Seat.” During his distinguished career, Sgt Stewart flew missions in more than 20 countries and earned numerous decorations, including the Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross. After retiring, he continued his aviation service at Langley Air Force Base for 15 years.
Above all, John was a devoted man of faith and a faithful member of Bethel Temple Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie H. Stewart, and other beloved family members. He is survived by his loving daughters, Angela Almond (Reginald Keith), Judith Stewart Hollars (Terry), and Janet Stewart (Larry); beloved grandchildren, Reginald Stewart Almond and CeCelia Marie Almond; treasured step-grandchildren, Catherine Hollars and Matthew Hollars; cherished step great-grandchildren, Jonah Smead and Noelle Hollars; his dear sister, Dora Moore; and a host of extended family, and friends.

A Visitation and Gathering will be held at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 North Armistead Ave, Hampton, Virginia 23666, on Thursday, April 9, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
The family will then receive friends at Bethel Temple Church, 1705 Todds Ln., Hampton, Virginia 23666, on Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am for a Visitation, followed by a Celebration of Life Service from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm.
Interment with Military Honors will take place at Hampton Memorial Gardens, 155 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, Virginia 23666, on April 11, 2026, at 3:00 pm.
