Marine Corporal Leopoldo (Leo) Vazquez of Hampton, VA lost his battle with PTSD on March 14, 2020.
Mr. Vazquez is survived by his spouse Miriam; three children, Ruby, Reginald, and Leopold, Jr. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren, Kevin, Remie, Raven, Mya, Jaiden, Sienna, Landon, Lovie, Liyah; and a great - grandchild, Kaylin.
Leo is a veteran of the Vietnam War (Danang), where he served with the 3rd Mar/Div 1st Bn, A Company. He was also based at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. He earned the Vietnam Commendation, a Combat Infantry Award and wore his Good Conduct medal proudly among several others. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Marines never left him, as friends and family will attest.
He was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, grew up in the Bronx, New York, the son of Alfredo and Rosa Cruz of Quebradillas, Puerto Rico.
Leo is preceded in death by his beloved sister, Jeanette and survived by his bothers, all veterans, Israel, Harry, Alfredo and his best buddy from his Marine company - Sunshine. As told to me by his best friend – There’s no heaven for Marines, they go to hell and regroup!
Aside from Leo that is, we know that he found a place in heaven. Leo loved playing and watching sports, especially his beloved NY Yankees and NY (Football) Giants. He aspired to be a bass player, loved music, primarily Latin (salsa) or old school soul. He loved to cook and take loving care of his dogs he referred to as his babies (Grunt and Samantha) and he never lost an argument he started, according to him that is.
A viewing was held on March 19th at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home in Hampton, VA for his family and immediate friends and the final ceremony for burial is to be held at a TBD due to COVID-19.
Rest easy, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother, you are not forgotten – Til Valhalla. We will miss you tremendously
