She was predeceased by her parents, James T. Allen and Jonsie Riddle Allen Penland; a brother, Jerry Allen; and two sisters, Betty Roland and Delores Hall.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Ernest Roy Scarborough, and their three children; Hazel "Diane" Scarborough, Susan Scarborough Scotti, and John Scarborough. She is also survived by grandson E. Bryan Gravely (Rachelle) of Newport News, VA, and their children Kathleen and Matthew; and grandson Edward D. Gravely (Angela) of Charlotte, NC, and their children Claire and William. Lucille was the third of eight siblings and is survived by brother Laurel Allen, sisters Iris Ledford, Patricia Barnett, Barbara Allen, and Grace Johnson and their extended families.
Lucille was a charter member of Newmarket Baptist Church where she worked in the church office and in the children's ministry, including Sunday School and Vacation Bible school, for many years. She read her Bible almost every day and even in the mental fog of her last days, she clearly quoted the Bible and spoke to her God in prayer. Lucille was an avid reader and passed that passion on to her children and grandchildren. She read to her children every day until they were old enough to read for themselves. She was gifted with crochet work and made many beautiful pieces, was a proficient typist and played the piano. She spent many years researching the genealogy of her ancestors and accumulated volumes of information.
Services will be held on Tuesday, October, 23, 2012, at West Hampton Baptist Church, at 12:30 P.M. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Peninsula Rescue Mission (1500 Huntington Avenue, Newport News, VA) or to West Hampton Baptist Church, (631 Aberdeen Road, Hampton, VA.)
The family would like to thank the care givers from Home Helpers, especially her faithful care giver, Sheila Waters, for providing the help and compassionate care that Lucille required as her disease progressed. They are also grateful to the dedicated staff of the Northampton Convalescent Center where she received excellent care.
