Micheal Puryear was born to Lillian Minor Puyear and Marvin Puryear on Friday, August 14, 1953. Michael had two older brothers, Leroy (who has preceded him) and Marvin “Auggie” Puryear.

Michael met and fell in love with the love of his life, who he called his “Queen”, Delores Davis in 1979. Together in 1988 they relocated to Virginia where they built what he would say “a beautiful life”. He flourished his career as a Sous Chef to include 25 years at the Hampton Yacht Club. Always ready to feed any and everybody who spent more than five minutes with him. With all the time and years he had spent in the Bahamas with family he became an honorary Bahamian.

An Icon, a presence, A king, real, raw, magnetic, Fred Astaire on the dance floor, and Loved a good joke are some of the statements that continue to be said about him through time. He was Pops and Uncle Mike to many.

On Tuesday, March 30, 2021, Michael Puryear was called home. He leaves behind to continue his legacy with his children, Rita, Tamika (Jose), Michael, Jor-EL, and of course Charles. As a supportive, loving and dedicated Grandfather of thirteen, Tori-EL, Tanyelle, Alissa, Avery, Michael, Christian, Tajari, Tania, Candace, Jor-EL, Kaleb, Tamia, and of course Taja; five Godchildren: Daniel, Suelene, Monique, Travis, and Tanita. A host of nieces, nephews, along with family and friends.

Michael would want to be remembered with a good dance song, a frosty cold beer, a good shot of Tequila, and a great joke. But he will truly be remembered for his unconditional love for his family especially his grandchildren. They were truly his pride and joy. He wore the name Grandpa like a badge of honor. He loved each and every one as if they were the only one.

My grandpa... whew this took time for me to write because I’m so mad at the world I just don’t understand why! This man loved me with all his ❤️ heart! I mean he would literally break his back for me 🥺. At the beginning it’s was just my older brother and my self and he was SOOO PROUD TO BE A GRANDPA you would have thought he was the one giving birth. He would go out of his way for anybody. I miss you every second of the day, but I’m continuing to be strong because I know you would want me to. May you Rest In Peace and continue to watch over us. I love You ❤️ and thank you for everything. I promise to make you proud 🤞🏾.

Lifetime friends are very rare these days... When one meets special people like Delores and Michael, you treasure all the memories you create throughout the years... Mike's sudden passing just reminded me how precious life and true friendship really is... His laugh, his sense of humor, will be surely missed but never forgotten... There were times we laughed so 😂🤣😂🤣 hard that our stomachs hurt... Rest in Heaven my brother 🙏🏾✝️

Uncle Mike was the people's champion. He was always there to help anyone that was in need. We will always remember his sincerity, generosity and wit. You always knew when he entered a room because the room would fill with laughter. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. We will miss him dearly. He will always be remembered, and in our hearts he will remain. We wish Aunt Delores and the rest of the family our deepest sympathies, prayers and blessings. He has gone home to the Lord and now will be able to rest peacefully...We love and miss you Uncle Mike... Until we meet again... Love always, Debi, Jayson and EJ❤️

Bro. Mike,
My heart was saddened when I heard you had entered eternal rest. Your jokes, laughter, and kindness will be forever missed. My family and I will always remember your famous saying "It's all about the Benjamins." As you send us smiles from heaven, you will brighten our day and kindle fond memories of a life well lived. We will meet again on the other side.
Love,
Rose Poole

Papa was an amazing man whose smile was infectious. He gave the best hugs and had the biggest heart. Tamika, mama and the rest of this loving family, our hearts are with you today and our prayers are lifting you up. Celebrate this great life and lift that cold beer up to the sky like papa would want you to!
