He was born on August 2, 1934 to Moses and Irma Powell. He was born in Burlington, NC, grew up in Danville, VA, but he became a resident of Hampton for 59 years. After serving three years in the US Army during the Korean War, he worked at a few different jobs before he went to work for the City of Newport News. He was a Parts Coordinator for the Parts Department, and he retired after 20 years of service with the city. After retiring, he continued to work part time, for several years, at Hop’s Place, in Hampton.
Norman was a longtime member of Bethel Baptist Church, and he served in the Bus Ministry, Junior Church as a teacher, and was deacon. He was a family man, and nothing brought him as much joy as being a husband, father, and grandfather. He also enjoyed a good road trip to the mountains.
He was preceded in rest by his beloved wife, Peggy A. Powell; his parents; brother, Richard Powell; and his sisters: Betty Dowdy and Evelyn Smith.
Left to cherish Norman’s memory are his daughters: Remonia L. Hayes of Newport News, Belinda G. Curtis (Tony) of Yorktown, and Beatrice A. Smith (Douglas) of Poquoson; grandchildren: Lisa Hassler (Chuck), Jeff Snow (Nicole), Hunter Smith (Samantha), and Taylor Curtis; and great-grandchildren: Brady L. Snow, Trey M. Snow, Hayden E. Smith, and Harper J. Smith.
A visitation for Norman will be held Friday, March 14, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 North Armistead Ave, Hampton, Virginia 23666. A celebration of life service will occur at 12:00 PM, followed by an interment with military honors at Parklawn Memorial Park.
