She was a native of Emporia, Virginia, but she spent 58 years of her life as a resident of Hampton, Virginia. She worked as a production line worker at Maida Development Company for 35 years, until her retirement in 2007. Retirement gave her time to be with her family and do the things she loved: traveling, sewing, and working in the children's and bus ministry at Bethel Baptist Church.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Fuller and Alice McKinney; her brother, Nod McKinney; and two of her sisters, Sarah Staton and Elizabeth "Becky" Sprouse.
Peggy is survived by her husband of 64 years, Norman Lee Powell; her daughters: Remonia L. Hayes of Newport News, Belinda G. Curtis (Tony) of Yorktown, and Beatrice A. Smith (Douglas) of Poquoson; her sister, Betty Oakley of Elizabeth City; her grandchildren: Lisa M. Hassler (Chuck), Jeff L. Snow (Nicole), Hunter A. Smith (Samantha), and Taylor A.N. Curtis; her great grandchildren: Brady L. Snow, Trey M. Snow, and Hayden E. Smith; and a multitude of extended family and close friends.
A celebration of life for Peggy will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, April 20, 2023 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 North Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23666. Interment to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park, 2551 North Armistead Avenue, Hampton, VA 23666.
