

Ruth Lee Lewis, 91, passed away on December 17, 2016. She was born on September 15, 1925 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina where she grew up on her parents’ farm in Weeksville, North Carolina. Ruth retired from the Newport News Public School system where she worked at Ferguson High School as a cashier/cafeteria worker where she often used her own money from her apron pocket to make certain that no child went hungry.
Ruth enjoyed working in her vegetable garden and sharing the fruits of her labor with any and all that stopped by. Her pride and joy was taking care of her children. Her family was her life and she poured her heart and soul into making sure their needs were met. She was also a member of Temple Baptist Church where she worked for many years in the nursery so that their parents could attend the service.
Ruth is preceded in rest by her parents, Claude Jackson and Dezzie Brickhouse Morris; brother, Aubrey Morris; and sister, Doris Nelson.
Ruth is survived by her husband of 58 years, John C. Lewis; sons, Edward Marvin Proctor (Mary Ann) and John Allen Proctor (Mary); daughters, Deborah Lewis Fulford (Bryan) and Brenda Lewis Caputo (Andy); ten grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, December 21, at Temple Baptist Church, Harpersville Rd., Newport News. Interment will be at 2:00 pm at Parklawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Temple Baptist Church or the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.
