Shirley Margaret (Nichols) Bruce

She was born at home in Second Creek, West Virginia on June 25, 1936 to Paul Watson and Flora Reed Nichols.

Shirley graduated from Roanoke Memorial Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1957. She married George Melvin Bruce (Pete) that same year. In 1962, after a move to Tidewater, Shirley began her career at Riverside Hospital where she worked in pediatrics, neurosurgery and dialysis for over 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters Jean Ellis (Howard), Katherine Reed, brother-in-law Donald Trent and daughter Kathy Bruce Ellinger.

She leaves behind daughters Donna Tignor (Keith), Sandra Rankin (Chris), Grandchildren Lauren Huftalen (Colby), Christopher Rankin (Amber), Abigail Rankin, Kelsey Rankin, Samuel Tignor (Jamie), Preston Rankin, Dorian Tignor, William Rankin, Great Grandchildren Grady and Lydia Huftalen, Luke and Elinor Rankin, Taylor Seagraves, Natalie and Rye Bruce and great great grand Ariella Seagraves, sister, Sharon Trent, brother-in-law, Joe Reed, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

Shirley was a long time member of Calvary Baptist Church until it closed. She then found a new church home at Parkview Baptist where she made new friends and enjoyed fellowship in her Life Group, Lunch Bunch and other activities.

The family will receive friends 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Sunday, February 26, 2023 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave., Hampton, VA 23666. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 2:00 PM, Monday, February 27, 2023 at the funeral home with interment to follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.
