

William J. Charles, 102, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2025. Born on August 12, 1923, William was one of seven children to Harvey L. and Edna J. Charles. He lived a life marked by devotion to family, service to his country, and commitment to community.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of more than 55 years, Wyleen B. Charles; and brothers and sisters, Betty, Robert, Francis(Jitter), Florence, and Harvey Jr.(Buddy).
He is survived by his son, Adrian W. Charles of Hampton; and daughter, Debbie C. Farmer (Bob M. Farmer) of Atlanta, Georgia. William was a proud grandfather to Benjamin C. Farmer (Anne R. Farmer) and great-grandchildren, Roddy, Libby, and Abby of Richmond, Virginia. He was also an equally proud grandfather to Thomas W. Farmer (Erin T. Farmer) and great-grandchildren, Luke and Maddie Grace of Charlotte, North Carolina. He is also survived by sister, Juliet C. Hill; sister-in-law, Sarah H. Charles; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A World War II Veteran, William served honorably in the United States Air Force as a Lieutenant, piloting bomber planes during the war. After his military service he became president and owner of R.F. Slaughter Lumber Corp., where his leadership and integrity earned him great respect.
William was passionate about golf and continued to enjoy the game well into his early 90’s. He was also a devoted member of Central United Methodist Church, actively participating until his health no longer allowed.
The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to the entire staff of The Chesapeake Retirement Community for their compassionate and loving care.
The family will receive friends on Monday,December 29, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home & Memorial Park, located at 2551 North Armistead Ave, Hampton, Virginia, 23666, in the Chapel. A Celebration of Life will follow from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, the interment will take place at Parklawn Memorial Park, 2551 North Armistead Ave, Hampton, Virginia, 23666, immediately following the service. Services will be officiated by Celebrant Don Phelps.
