Agnes M. Morrison, a longtime resident of Laton, was born in a railroad car on a siding near Morris, Oklahoma on May 19, 1922, passed away peacefully after a long term battle with health issues on Saturday, June 30, 2018. She was 96 years old.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years David Thomas “Tom” Morrison on March 9, 1998. Agnes was also preceded in death by her parents Ruben Dixon and Flonnie Jewel Norwood, oldest son Ruben Dee “RD” and by all of her siblings; Alma Jane McGowne , Alfred Oliver, Anson Vance, Ardith Lee, Annie Arleen Blassingame, Aubry Andrew, and James Argyle.
Agnes is survived by her three children; Dewey Dixon Morrison and wife Nancy of FL. Phyllis Marie Browning and husband Ross of Laton and Alfred Thomas Morrison of Laton. She also leaves behind 7 grandchildren; Ricky Lee Morrison and wife Jeann, Randal Dee Morrison, Melissa Ann Morrison and husband Patrick Stranahan, Mitchell Dee Morrison, Eric Wayne Nelson and wife Ann-Marie, Ryan Allen Morrison and wife Karen “Caeli” and Wayne Michael Morrison and 9 great-grandchildren; Aedan, Nathan, Connor, Jacob, Carson, Brandon, Dannika, Christian, and Cole.
Tom and Agnes were living in Coalinga where they bought a house. However, believing that times would be better they arranged to move the family to Laton where they bought a 10 acre parcel of farm land for $100 an acre on time payments and also bought a 2 room house that was sitting across the street. They paid $30 dollars for the house and $100 to move it to their property. Agnes worked side-by-side with husband Tom as they added a country kitchen, bedroom, a bathroom and a back porch. They had a home for their family.
Times were not easy on the farm and the family eventually moved back to Coalinga where Tom found work with the city.
Not one to rest on her laurels, Agnes started remodeling the house in Coalinga and upon seeing the progress that she was making was asked by a neighbor if it was difficult. Agnes and Maggie supported each other and in the end eventually there were two completely remodeled houses which are still standing today. Family, friends, and neighbors knew Agnes, not only for her ability to tackle and finish large remodeling jobs or her prowess in the kitchen which were second to none, but also by her skill and ability to create intricate and beautiful “Works of Art” in any matter of media ranging from; doilies, pot holders, afghans, lap robes and car robes. She was equally skilled in knitting, and crocheting, but her skills really began to shine when she created hand-made quilts in sizes ranging from baby blankets up to king sized comforters. Her efforts did not go unrewarded as attested to by the number of award ribbons she won at the Kings County Fair every year.
Agnes’ visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 11th from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at People’s Funeral Chapel; 501 N. Douty St, Hanford, and a Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, July 12th at 9:30 a.m. at Hanford Cemetery; 10500 S. 10th Ave, Hanford where Tom has been waiting patiently for her to join him as they once again explore the future together.
