Art was the beloved son of Arthur Charles Ramm, Sr. and Lillian Marie Wehrwein. Born in Chicago on August 28, 1929, Art attended Farragut High School where he excelled in both baseball and basketball. After graduation in 1947, he continued his education at Purdue University, receiving a Bachelor of Science in General Agriculture in 1951. At Purdue, he served as president of Phi Kappa Tau and showcased his athletic abilities through intramural sports.
On June 24, 1951, Art married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Shirley Ann Wenzel. After four short months, Art was drafted into the Army where he served as a Platoon Sergeant in the Korean War. After the war, they lived briefly in Palatine, IL and Bakersfield, CA, before making Hanford their permanent home in 1959. Art worked as an agronomist at Westlake Farms for 34 years where his hard work and expertise made a lasting impact.
A devoted family man, Art was dedicated to his four children: Wayne (wife Nancy, deceased), Barbara (husband Craig Peskind), Andrew (wife Diana), and Susan (husband Joe Hoover). He was very close to his sister Ann Marie Moeck (deceased) and her family. He and Shirley have been blessed with seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren. Art and Shirley’s 74 years of marriage and commitment have been a tremendous inspiration to their family.
Art was a pillar of integrity, warmth and unwavering faith. He touched the lives of so many with his cheerful smile, big handshake and even bigger heart! Known fondly for his sense of humor, Art was always ready with a joke or pun, even to his final days. A kind soul with a humble nature, Art had a profound ability to make others feel welcomed and valued. Content with life’s simple pleasures, he had a passion for all things weather, vegetable gardening, travel, sports and enjoyed many kinds of family and social games. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through loyal service to his church and community.
Art’s faith was a cornerstone of his life; he believed wholeheartedly in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, deriving strength and guidance from Scripture. He was a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday School and served as an Elder and member of several committees.
Art faced death without fear, looking forward to reuniting with his Lord, as expressed in his favorite Scripture: John 3:16-17. His spirit, generosity and unwavering faith will forever inspire those he leaves behind.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate Art’s incredible life will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Hanford. The date of the service will be announced once confirmed.
