Grant was born on July 27, 1933, near Blanchard, Oklahoma, to Mattie and Wallace (Red) Myers. Sadly, his mother died two days later. At age 3, Grant moved with his father and grandparents to California to escape the Dust Bowl. After many years of following the crops, the family finally settled in Hamilton City. His father remarried and had two daughters. Grant graduated from high school in 1951, the first in his family to do so.
Grant enlisted in the Navy in 1951. He was assigned to the USS Ajax, a repair ship that supported other ships fighting in the Korean War, sailing between San Diego, CA, and Sasebo and Yokosuka, Japan. Because he could type at least 35 words per minute, he became the ship’s storekeeper. While on leave in 1952, he met the love of his life, Rosemary Williams. They married Nov. 1, 1953, and settled in San Diego where Grant was stationed. After discharge from the Navy, Grant studied accounting at Chico State College.
The family, which now included son Robin, daughter Laura and, soon, Nancy, moved to Hanford for Grant’s first teaching assignment in 1960. He started his career teaching typing and bookkeeping and ended it teaching accounting and Consumer Law. He coached his accounting students to wins in local and state competitions. Grant and his friend and fellow teacher, Lonn Huntington, taught the very first computer classes in the area. In 1991, Grant was voted Teacher of the Year. He retired from Hanford High in 1992.
In retirement, Grant enjoyed spending time with his wife, walking with his friends, talking with and teaching his four grandsons about life and orographic rainfall, sitting on his back patio in the heat, and visiting with family and friends. He especially loved to play pinochle. He played it while in the Navy, taught and played it with his wife and various family members, and whenever he got a chance.
In May 2018, Grant was privileged to go on the Honor Flight to Washington, DC, accompanied by his son, Robin. There he, along with other war veterans, were given tours of war memorials and Arlington National Cemetery.
Grant is preceded in death by his beloved Rosie, in 2020 and his sister, Patricia Roberts, in 2018. He is survived by his “favorite” sister Bonnie (Jon) Pata, son Robin Myers, daughters Laura (Jim) Nelson and Nancy (Joel) Ostlund, grandsons Tom (Nellie) and Trevor Nelson and Erik and Adam Ostlund, and many nieces and nephews. He had a special place in his heart for friends Madeline and Jim VanNoort and Theresa White.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on March 15, 2025, at Lemoore Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lemoore Presbyterian Church, 260 B St., Lemoore, CA 93245.
