He graduated from Hanford High School in 1947. He attended Fresno State where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Art, as well as his teaching credential. Bob began his teaching career in Modesto prior to returning to Hanford teaching Industrial Arts with his father for 10 years.
During this time, between teaching and raising his three boys, Andy, Scott and Dion, he pursued his Master’s Degree successfully completing it in 1965. Bob was always an artist and sculptor and it was through his art work that he was recognized and offered a position within the Art Department at College of Sequoias in Visalia. Bob taught at College of Sequoias for more than 30 years. He retired in 1990 and was inducted into the College of Sequoias Hall of Fame for his outstanding achievement and dedication to the Arts.
During his time teaching in Hanford and College of Sequoias, he started Marcellus Displays. He worked designing and completing window displays for local Hanford businesses. He also designed and built displays for not only Kings County but also Tulare, Stanislaus and Kern County for the California Exposition and State Fair in Sacramento. He held the position of Show Coordinator and Designer for a number of years.
In 1980, Bob married Sallie Goldenstein and two families were blended. Bob and Sallie, both actively involved in the Arts were instrumental in establishing the Bastille Gallery, the Courthouse Gallery and the Kings Art Center. Bob was Director/Curator of the Kings Art Center for nearly 20 years. They both taught classes, took excursions to California galleries and encouraged the community to embrace the Arts as much as they did. They spent many days during retirement traveling throughout the United States.
Bob was fortunate to be able to intertwine his appreciation for the outdoors with his love of teaching and art. Bob had a definitive love of nature. He started with his parents and their gold mine in Trinity County in the 1940’s. His passion for sharing his love of art with others was exemplified in his summer art classes he hosted in Kings Canyon, Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks. He was an avid hiker, camper, fisherman and skier, even teaching skiing in Squaw Valley for multiple winters. He backpacked with family and friends with his greatest accomplishments being climbing both Half Dome and Mt. Whitney. His acquisition of golf came after retirement and he spent many days “paring the course”.
