Sam McKenzie, beloved husband, father, and devoted follower of Jesus Christ, passed away peacefully from heart disease on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at Adventist Medical Center in Hanford, CA.
Born on December 24, 1940, in Port Arthur, TX, to J.C. and Fannie McKenzie, Sam grew up with his siblings, Darrell Timothy and Nancy Elizabeth. After graduating from high school, he pursued a degree in Sociology at East Texas Baptist College and continued his education at Golden Gate Theological Seminary. He cherished many road trip adventures in his Volkswagen Beetle, creating lasting memories with friends and family.
At the age of 26, Sam married the love of his life, Linda, with whom he shared 57 wonderful years. Together, they lived in Tulare, CA, for many years, where they started their family, before moving to Lemoore in 1979. His life was a testament to his deep faith and commitment to serving Christ in all that he did.
Sam dedicated his life to ministry, serving as pastor of First Baptist Church, Corcoran. He later worked as a USPS Letter Carrier until his retirement in 2000, after which he spent 10 years as a substitute teacher in Kings County, touching the lives of countless students. His love for children of all ages was evident in his many volunteer roles at church, including nursery care, Sunday School director, junior high youth leader, Vacation Bible School assistant, children’s ministry helper, camp counselor, usher, deacon, and more. In his later years, Sam collected lighthouse decor as a testament to the Light of the World, his firm foundation.
A devoted family man, Sam adored his wife, daughters, and grandchildren. He also had a special love for his dogs. He enjoyed road trips with his family, often traveling in their tent trailer to explore the mountains, coast, and deserts. Together, they visited numerous national and state parks, forests, and historical sites. A proud patriot, Sam loved visiting state capitols and collecting flags, maps, and books.
Gardening was one of Sam’s greatest joys. He found peace in watering and digging, growing vegetables such as tomatoes, squash, and lettuce, along with beautiful flowers.
Sam is survived by his loving wife, two daughters and their husbands, two grandchildren, his brother and sister, and many cherished friends and church family.
A private graveside service will be held for family, followed by a Celebration of Life on March 3 at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church, Hanford, CA.
