Vernon Boyd Davis was born in Sulfur, Oklahoma on February 10th, 1932, the oldest son and the fourth of nine children of Arthur Allen Davis and Zeta Josephine Simpson. The family moved from Oklahoma to the California Bay Area before Vernon was 10 years old, and he spent his teen years in Richmond and Sacramento.
After a few odd jobs including dairy worker and movie theatre assistant manager, Vernon joined the Navy in 1952 and spent the next 20 years seeing the world. He retired from the Navy in 1971, and worked as an auto mechanic and air conditioning repairman. His last, and probably favorite, job was serving for over 24 years as the manager of Oak Grove Cemetery in Laton, CA where he was instrumental in the establishment of a Veterans Memorial and an annual Memorial Day Service.
It was during his travels in the Navy, taking him to San Diego, CA, that he met and married Beverly Gene Thomas in 1960. They were together for over 54 years until her passing in September of 2014. Vernon and Beverly are the parents of four children, Robert Allen Davis of Hanford, CA, Rebecca Gene Davis of Waynesville, NC, Melinda Anne Cozad of Riverdale, CA, and Michelle Lynn Davis of Milwaukee, WI, as well as nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Vernon was a long-time and faithful servant of the Lord, and member of the church of Christ in Riverdale, CA. He left this life to be with the Lord on January 6th, 2018. He will be greatly missed by all; but we rejoice in the thought of his reunion with his wife, his parents, and all the friends and family who have gone on before him.
A Celebration of Vernon's Life will be held on Monday, January 15, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Christ; 1596 W. Grangeville Blvd., Hanford, CA 93230. An Inurnment will follow at a later date at Oak Grove Cemetery will he and his beloved wife will rest together.
