

Peter Murphy of Duxbury, formerly a 52 year resident of Rockland passed away peacefully on April 25, 2026 at the age of 87. He was born in Gracefield, Portarlington, County Offaly, Ireland in 1938, the 5th of 9 children to the late Francis and Catherine (Greene) Murphy. Peter immigrated to the United States at the age of 20 where he met his wife, Kathleen and later raised five children together.
He proudly served in the United States Army stationed in Germany. He spent his career as an engraver and enjoyed weekend adventures camping with his family. He was an avid gardener, gifted handy man, enjoyed daily walks and following GAA hurling and football, Boston sports teams and Notre Dame. He enjoyed traveling with his family. One of his favorite memories was a trip home to Ireland with his brothers to cheer on their beloved Offaly team.
He could frequently be found doing house projects for his children. Above all, Peter carried a strong faith throughout his entire life and was best known for loyalty to his family and willingness to help anybody in need. Peter spent the last 29 years in his most cherished role as Pa. He took great pride in his grandchildren, spending time with them and enjoyed every achievement they accomplished.
He was the beloved husband to Kathleen (Carroll) Murphy for 61 years. Devoted father of Christine and John Leavitt of Rockland, Peter and Michelle Murphy of Johns Creek, GA, Catherine and Gerry Maiorana of Quincy, Richard and Kaitlen Murphy of Los Angeles, CA, Colleen and Jared McGrath of Duxbury. Proud and loving Pa to Michael (Emily), Ryan (Kaylee), Conor, McKenzie, Kathleen, Piper, Laney, Jack, Kate, James, Levi and Callie. Great Pa to Nicholas. Brother of Francis Murphy and his wife Sheila, Mary Gaul and Catherine Rogers. Predeceased by his siblings Sara Ogar, Michael, John, Charles and Patrick Murphy. Also survived by many nieces and nephews and extended Talty and Carroll family in Ireland.
Visiting hours will be held at Sullivan Funeral Home, 45 East Water Street, Rockland on Sunday, May 3rd from 2-5 PM. Family and friends will gather in the funeral home on Monday morning at 8 AM for a brief Celebration of Life prior to the Funeral Mass which will be held at Our Lady of the Angels Church, 392 Hanover Street, Hanover at 9 AM. Burial at a later date in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne
