
Rev. James F. Mahoney, 83, formerly of Pembroke died, Sunday, March 9, 2003 after a period of failing health at the Metro West Medical Center in Framingham. The son of the late Jeremiah and Anne Mackey Mahoney, he was born in Newton on October 20, 1919. Rev. Mahoney attended Boston College before attending St. John's Seminary in Brighton. He was ordained on June 29, 1945. His first assignment was at St. Colman's Church in Brockton, he was there from 1945 until 1948. He was later assigned to Sacred Heart Church in Middleboro from 1948 until 1955, then at Sacred Heart Church in Weymouth from 1955 until 1962. His next nine years were at St. Ambrose Church in Dorchester and finally in 1971 he was transferred to St. Thecla's Church in Pembroke where he was Pastor until his retirement in 1997. Rev. Mahoney loved to play golf and tennis with his parishioners. His family says that he was also a master of ?useless? sports like billiards, ping pong, card games and especially checkers. Many at St. Thecla's may remember his beloved cat, Morris. You never knew where Morris might show up, during Sunday Mass or as at least one bride might tell you, in the corner of a wedding photo. He is survived by 2 brothers, Joseph Mahoney of Yarmouth Port and William Mahoney of West Yarmouth, 3 nephews, John Leary of Dover, William Mahoney of CT and John Mahoney of FL, 2 nieces, Marilyn Zander of GA and Susan Seymour of PA and 15 great nieces and great nephews. He was the brother of the late Rev. John Mahoney and the late Mary Leary. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, March 13, 2003 at 11 AM in St. Thecla's Church, 145 Washington Street, Rte 53 in North Pembroke. The Principal Celebrant will be Bishop Richard Malone. The Homilist will be Monsignor William Glynn, Pastor of Holy Family Church in Duxbury. Internment in Calvary Cemetery in Waltham. Rev. Mahoney will be received at St. Thecla's Church with a Reception of the Body Rite on Wednesday a 2 PM. He will lie in State in the Church on Wednesday from 2-8 PM.
