
She was a retired high school teacher and a member of the Harmony Baptist Church for 68 years. Prior to that, she was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Cool Springs.
Born December 6, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Broaddus Buckner and Pearl Abernathy Swann.
She grew up in the rural community of Cool Springs in Iredell County. She graduated from Cool Springs High School, Mitchell Community College in Statesville and Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish and history and taught at both Elkin and Harmony schools.
She was a Sunday school teacher, pianist, member of the WMU, and sang alto in the choir at the Harmony Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters; Sue Lawson of Stafford, VA and Jane Laclergue of Olympia, WA, two sons-in-law, Lon Lawson of Stafford, VA and Ed LacIergue of Olympia, WA.
In addition there are four grandchildren, Jennifer Scalf of Hawthorne, NJ, Lon Lawson of Dallas, TX, Allison Laclergue of Portland, OR and David Laclergue of Seattle, WA.
She has three surviving sisters: Edith Swann of Mars Hill, Julia Swann Inman of Cool Springs and Martha Swann Revis of St. Cloud, FL. She has numerous nieces and nephews, including Charlotte and Carolyn Inman of Cool Springs.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Gilbert Grose.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, November 5th at the Reavis Funeral Home of Harmony. A funeral service at 11 a.m. will be held at the Ernest Troutman Memorial Chapel with Dr. Bill Campbell, a nephew of the deceased, officiating. Immediately following will be the burial in the Harmony Cemetery.
