

Calvin Royer "Kelly" Koons, 62, died suddenly of Respiratory Failure at home on Thursday January 18, 2018. Born in February 1955, he was the beloved only son of Jeanne (Royer) Koons of Harrisburg and the late Calvin Herr Koons. He is survived by maternal Uncle Joseph F. Royer of Thurmont, MD, and Aunt Dorothy Royer of Oldtown, MD.
The list of cousins with heavy hearts is very long, here we can say thank you to a few: Steve Koons of Gettysburg, Ann Koons of Ojai, CA, Philip Koons of Ithaca, NY, Mary Beth Dempsey of Oldtown, MD, Pete Dempsey of Houston, Tx, Debbie Bowling of Roanoake, Lois Royer of Frederick, MD, Jamie Royer of Thurmont, MD, Lee Royer of Taneytown, MD, Geoffrey Elbo of Westminster, MD and John Iles of Tacoma, WA.
Kelly graduated Susquehanna Township High School, class of 1973. He attended the College of William and Mary and the University of Exeter, UK, graduating in 1977 from William and Mary with honors, and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In 1980 he earned a degree from the Dickinson School of Law and was admitted to the PA Bar Association later that year. After joining the bar, Kelly worked for White & Williams in Philadelphia, PA, then clerked for Judge William W. Caldwell of the US District Court from 1982-84. In 1984 he accepted a position with the Office of Attorney General, Commonwealth of PA, where he rose to serve as a Senior Deputy Attorney General. During his tenure in the OAG, Kelly himself argued a case before the US Supreme Court and was a member of OAG teams that argued several other cases before the Supreme Court. After his retirement in 2012, Kelly served as a volunteer at the Bethesda Men's Mission in Harrisburg.
Kelly enjoyed the study of history and the law, reading, travel, fine dining and the company of friends and family. He was loved and cherished and will be missed by many, including dear friends Gwen Mosley, Lisa Sheidy, Dylis Lyter, Bart DeLone, Peter Garland, all of Harrisburg, Francis and Deborah Fillipi of Landenburg, PA, Dan & Nora Doyle of Carlisle, PA and Sonya Hodges of Philadelphia, PA.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday January 26, 2018 at Neill Funeral Home, 3501 Derry St., Harrisburg, PA. Rev. John Green, Pastor of Paxton Presbyterian Church will officiate. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10:00am until the time of the service. Inurnment will be at Germantown Bethel Cemetery, Cascade, MD, to be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions in memory of Calvin R. Koons may be made to the Bethesda Men's Mission, 611 Reily Street, Harrisburg, PA 17102
