John B. Martz III, 56, of Harrisburg, went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior while holding hands with his wife, at his bedside on Thursday, September 23, 2021. Surviving is his wife of nearly 29 years, Teresa (Baer) Martz; son, Michael Shaffer; mother, Marlene Martz; parents-in-law, Kenneth and Dorothy Baer; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Shelley Baer; niece Rachel Baer; sister and brother-in-law, Lori and Dan Ligon and their children; and many wonderful friends and extended family who will all miss him very much. He was preceded in death by his father, John B. Martz, Jr.
John retired from the Commonwealth of PA, serving in the Office of the Budget's Office of the Comptroller and in the State Employees' Retirement System. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, family and friends; volunteering for odd jobs at church; and assisting his wife in the church's nursing home ministry by driving the church van to transport the kids, lending a hand in running bingo games and helping the kids minister well to the residents. John was very active in playing baseball, softball, basketball and golf. He truly appreciated the time he spent with his buddies doing those activities. He also enjoyed watching the Notre Dame football team, working out at the gym and cracking corny jokes.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate John's life on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at Lighthouse Church, 600 N. 48th St., Harrisburg. Visitation will be from 10-11am, immediately followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11:00 am, and a reception with light refreshments. Feel free to wear your favorite sports attire in his honor. In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's memory can be sent to Lighthouse Church at the above address.
