

Michael J. Batko, 86, of Susquehanna Township passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, March 6, 2016. Michael is remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a decorated U.S. Army veteran, having served his country with distinction during the Korean War receiving the Purple Heart. Before and after the war, Michael worked for over 35 years for The Bethlehem Steel Corporation. He was an avid DIYer around the home, loved his garden and orchard and cheered Saturdays and Sundays for his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Pittsburgh Steelers. Michael was born on September 25, 1929 in Johnstown, PA and was the son of Paul and Mary (Chema) Batko. Michael was preceded in death by his first wife, Julia; his son, Michael John; his brothers John and Paul and sisters Mary Batko, Margaret Delfert, Helen Zahurak, Ann Chimiak and Agnes Infantino. Michael is survived by his wife, Maria Teresa Furfaro Batko; sister Jean Woodrow; daughters Cynthia (and husband Richard, deceased) Forshier of Phoenix, AZ; Michele Spack and husband, Gary of Newtown, PA; Anne Marie Bischoff and husband Marc of Plymouth Meeting; step-son, Frank Hollister and wife Regina of Camp Hill, PA and step-son Barrett Hollister and wife Guilia of Marysville, PA. Michael loved his 5 grandchildren: Justin, Dylan, Lindsay, Noah and Sophia. Visitation will begin at 10:00am on Monday, March 14, 2016 followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am - both at Holy Family Catholic Church in Harrisburg. Immediately following the Mass will be an internment at Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County, PA where Michael will be buried with full military honors. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Michael's many wonderful care givers at Harrisburg Hospital and Homeland Hospice of Harrisburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Homeland Hospice of Harrisburg, 2300 Vartan Way, #205, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
