Samuel B. Abate, 93, of Mechanicsburg, passed away Friday, October 22, 2021 at Holy Spirit Hospital. Born February 3, 1928 in Harrisburg; he was the son of the late Antonio and Maria (Inquaggiato) Abate; and preceded in death by his wife, Mary V. Abate; and grandson, Antonio J. Abate. Surviving are 2 sons, Anthony S. Abate, of Mechanicsburg and Joseph M. Abate, of Red Bank, NJ; 2 daughters, Rosemarie E. Fackler, of Middletown and Marlene L. Weikert, of Harrisburg; 7 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Sam retired from the Mechanicsburg Navy ships Parts Control Center, a former employee for the former Olmsted Air Force Base, Middletown and the former Marine Corp Supply Activity, Philadelphia, and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Sam was a graduate of Harrisburg Catholic High School, class of 1946. Sam was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Harrisburg, Central PA Chapter of the Sports Hall of Fame, Hershey Italian Lodge; was a past President of the Harrisburg South League and a former Midget Baseball coach for the South League at the Boys Club, where he won several City Championships for Avis Rent A Car. He was an avid Notre Dame, New York Yankees and Bishop McDevitt sports fan. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:30 AM Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, 6150 Allentown Blvd., Harrisburg. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. A viewing will be held 10:00 AM Saturday until the time of the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bishop McDevitt High School, 1 Crusader Way, Harrisburg, PA 17111.
