Sebastiana (Di Giorgi) Caniglia, 96, of Harrisburg, passed away on September 28, 2023, at the home of her loving and devoted son, with him and close friends at her side.
Born August 08, 1927, in Palagonia Catania, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Giuseppe and Giuseppina (Musumeci) Di Giorgi. Nellie was preceded in death by her husband Francesco Caniglia and her daughter-in-law Linda Ann Caniglia.
Nellie is survived by her son, Frank (Concetto) Caniglia of Harrisburg; two daughters, Nuccia Caniglia of Camp Hill and Giusy Caniglia, also of Camp Hill; sisters Maria, Tanina and Giovanna Di Giorgi of Sicily; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, both in the United States and Italy.
Nellie’s education started at a very young age in fashion design, driven by a passion for clothing and free-lancing. Her ability to make a garment look like a million dollars and fit like a glove demonstrated a skill second to none. She pursued a career in alterations, honing her skills to a level that is now rarely seen. She enjoyed meeting clients in need of assistance with alterations, and provided input on tailoring their garment to a perfect and complimentary fit. Nellie’s career started in the garment industry in New York City and later moved to the high-end boutiques in Harrisburg (including Mary Sacks, Lady Jane, Pomeroy’s and the Bon-Ton). She later specialized in altering wedding dresses and truly enjoyed her role in giving each bride that breath-taking moment on their special day.
Anyone who encountered Nellie immediately noticed and were impressed by how impeccably put together she was. She enjoyed dressing to the hilt, always wearing heels and dazzling accessories, with make-up and hair looking as if she had just walked out of the salon. Her infectious smile and personality would just make your day. Her neighbors could often be heard saying, “here comes our butterfly.” That same passion was extended to her family, as she took pride in ensuring they were always dressed to impress.
Nellie loved her family very much, and they were always her highest priority. She supported every aspect of their journey, instilling the importance of faith, family, and education as well as a love and passion for authentic Italian food. She enjoyed entertaining, and looked forward to family reunions where she delighted in seeing extended family, especially the children and new additions.
Later in life, Nellie’s journey took her to Country Meadows of Hershey, where the environment provided her with a structure and stimulation that gave her a renewed purpose in life. She thrived on the social aspect as well as the creative outlet provided by music and art. She enjoyed the outdoors, and her eyes would sparkle on a country drive or just going out to see Buddy the bird. In this setting, she received the gentle love and dignity she deserved.
In her final years, Nellie settled into the home of her son and daughter-in-law, benefitting from their thoughtful and loving care. During those years, she was the gem of the neighborhood and radiated from the attention of many visitors. She watched the Food Network, listened to Italian music, and enjoyed fabulous home cooking. Her eyes would light up when her daughter-in-law would sing “You are My Sunshine” to her.
Nellie’s family extends their sincere gratitude to friends, neighbors, Country Meadows of Hershey, and the medical community for the compassion and love given to our dear Nellie.
