Edith Violet (Carter) Nickens

Edith Violet Carter Nickens, 91, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2019 in Harrisonburg. A daughter of the late Harry Carter and Pauline Rhodes Carter Dallard, she was born on May 6, 1927 in Harrisonburg. On April 25, 1952, she married Joseph L. Nickens, who preceded her in death in July of 1991. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Brown and five brothers, Elon and Allen Rhodes, and Harry, Charles and Dennis Carter. Edith was an active member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, American Legion Unit 76 and the secretary of the Eastern Star. In her church, Edith served on various committees and especially the United Methodist Women. Edith truly had a strong faith in God. She was employed by the Yancey family and James Madison University housekeeping department for 29 years. Edith retired from Donnelly after 12 ½ years in 1993. Edith will always be remembered for her zestful living, socializing with her friends, her job, and jolly personality and her frankness in situations and traveling with community friends. Edith had a strong devotion to her family members, planning family reunions and had a phenomenal memory of family history. Edith is survived by her caregivers, Vaunda Brown and Donna Rhodes Brock and a large number of nieces and nephews, whom she acknowledged throughout her lifetime. She was very proud of their accomplishments. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at 1 pm, at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with Rev. Wilma White officiating. Burial will follow at Newtown Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12 pm until 1 pm at the funeral home or anytime at the home of Donna Rhodes Brock.
