She was the daughter of the late John Walter and Margaret Sue Bott Fitchett.
Mrs. Canter was raised in Cape Charles, VA and later resided in Bethesda, MD. She and her husband moved to Harrisonburg where she has resided for 11 years.
She graduated from Richmond Polytechnic Institute and taught elementary school in Charlottesville. She was an Elder of Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, MD, and was a long term volunteer for the Red Cross at the National Institutes of Health. She had a passion for animals, loved to travel and enjoyed playing bridge. Mrs. Canter was a voracious reader and a lifelong learner.
On July 16, 1949 she married, Harry Yancey Canter, who preceded her in death on June 27, 2016. She was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Deborah Canter.
She is survived by her children, Dr. Harry Y. Canter, Jr. and wife, Karen, of Easton, MD, Mary Susan Canter and Dr. John W. F. Canter and wife, Nancy, all of Harrisonburg; five grandchildren, Laura Widmer and husband, Seth, Julie, Nolan, Walter Canter and wife, Allison, and William; and one great-granddaughter, Claire Canter.
A Memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm, Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Meredith Chapel, Sunnyside Retirement Community, with Rev. Dr. William J. Lowrance officiating. A private burial at Woodbine Cemetery will be earlier in the day.
