George Herbert Rose

He was born on June 9, 1926 in Portsmouth, VA, and was the son of the late Herbert W. and Harriet V. Curling Rose.

George was a retired professional landscape architect, a graduate of the University of Georgia. He worked for several private firms and lastly for the US Forest Service retiring in 1983. He was a belly gunner of a heavy bomber, B-24, veteran of the Army Air Corps, WWII. He was past president of the Rockingham Kiwanis Club, Past president of the National Assoc. of Retired Federal employees, former Boy Scout leader in Duluth, Minn., Director of a group that founded the Harrisonburg Tree commission, a literacy volunteer who taught people to read English, he was a member of the Harrisonburg Baptist Church where he served as past Director of the SS, adult choir member, 20 years a deacon, Sunday school teacher for over 25 years. He was on the church committee as chairman to obtain the electronic organ now installed in the church, and the committee to hire Assistant Pastor, T.W. Johnson.

In 1952, he married his first wife, of 43 years, Carol W. Westbrook, who preceded him in death. In 1996 he married Audrey J. Franklin Rose, who survives.

Also surviving are four children, Steve W. Rose of Waynesboro, Lynn C. Stover of Harrisonburg, Tracy Rose Moyers of Corvallis, Mont., and Christine R. Harriger of Woodstock; three step-children, Cathy J. Hall of Freeport, FL, Jeffrey L. Franklin of Bristol, TN, and John A. Franklin of Easton, PA; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at Lindsey Funeral Home.

Per his request, he will be cremated and a memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 15, at Harrisonburg Baptist Church with Pastors T.W. Johnson, Sam Jones and Stacy Nowell officiating.
