

He was born in Bridgewater on October 10, 1931 and was the son of the late Charles Samuel and Wilda Pauline Wheelbarger Whitmore.
Howard lived most of his early life in Bridgewater and in 1951 graduated from Harrisonburg High School. While in high school he played football and basketball. Following high school Howard attended the Newport News Apprentice School, while there he played football for a semi-pro league. He later joined the U.S. Navy.
In 1962, he graduated from the University Of Virginia School Of Architecture. He began his architecture career in Baltimore, MD and continued his lifetime career in Harrisonburg, privately and at James Madison University.
Howard was a long time member of Otterbein United Methodist Church and he currently attended Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church. He was active in both the Harrisonburg Exchange Club and the Harrisonburg Elks.
Howard enjoyed playing golf, had a passion for woodworking and enjoyed spending time at the family cottage in Rawley Springs.
In 1963, he married the former, Sarah Dadisman, who survives. Also surviving is a son, Neil D. Whitmore and wife, Gwendolyn of Fairfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles and Donald Whitmore; and one sister, Eleanora Whitmore Liskey.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 am, on Friday, October 5, 2012 at Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church, with Rev George Evans officiating. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church. Burial will be private.
Military honors will be by Dayton American Legion Post #27.
