
Hugh was born in Patrick County VA. to Claude and Cosby Hill. He grew up on his family’s tobacco farm in Dry Pond, VA. with siblings Nell, Leonard, Carl Lee, Joe and Betty Sue. Hugh attended Francisco School in Francisco, NC. He left school at an early age to work the family farm, care for his mother, and allow his siblings to finish their schooling.
Hugh developed a passion for all things mechanical and his skills as a master mechanic led him to an early career at L.D. Hill Service Station. Later, Hugh joined his brother in the quarry business, crushing stone and growing the business as Vice President of Salem Stone Corporation.
On Oct. 19th 1943, Hugh married his sweetheart Lois Mentoria Smith in Danbury, NC. They had four children, Alan Ray (deceased at birth), Beverly Kay (deceased at birth), Geraldine and Jeffrey.
Hugh and his family traveled throughout Virginia as quarries were developed along the I-81 and I-64 corridors.
Hugh was a member of Countyline Baptist Church in Ruther Glen and Dublin Baptist Church in Dublin, VA.
Mr. Hill is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lois, his daughter Geri Fisher (Edward) of Doswell, VA, and his son Jeff Hill (Kate) of Harrisonburg, VA. He also leaves behind four grandchildren, Greg Fisher (Kim Dow) of Forestville, CA. Carrie Fisher (Kyler Carpenter) of Moab, UT. along with Hudson and Morgan Hill of Harrisonburg, VA. He will be dearly missed by his great-granddaughters Sydney and Pearl.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at Dublin Baptist Church.
