Shirley Puffenbarger Spitzer

She was born March 6, 1918 in Fort Seybert, WV and was the daughter of the late Edward H. and Lucy Blizzard Rexrode.

She attended Pendleton County Schools before moving to Harrisonburg in 1936 to seek employment. She was employed at JCPenneys and Hefners Credit Jewelers for 24 years where she was an Assistant Manager. Shirley and her husband, E.C., owned and operated Lacey Spring Grocery Store for 23 years. She was a member of First Church of the Brethren.

On April 16, 1938, she married Ester Clyde “E.C.”, Puffenbarger, who preceded her in death May 3, 1982. On January 4, 1986, she married Albert M. Spitzer, Sr., who preceded her in death on August 12, 2008.

She is survived by one sister, Sylvia Brunk of Harrisonburg; one brother, Bruce Rexrode of Spencer, WV; a number of nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces, nephews; great-great nieces and nephews; two stepchildren, A. Mark Spitzer, Jr. of Singers Glen and Vicki Smith of Georgia.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Pauline Howard, Hazel Zirk and Willia Fleming; and three brothers, Roy, Ralph and Allen Rexrode.

A funeral service will be held at 2 pm, Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with The Rev. Beth Jarrett and Rev. David Brunk officiating. Burial will follow in Weavers Mennonite Church Cemetery.
