Steven Lee Eckard, 76, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2025, in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Born on January 6, 1949, in Harrisonburg, Steve spent his life deeply connected to the community he loved.
Steve’s professional journey led him to James Madison University's IT Department, where he worked diligently before retiring. His expertise and commitment left a lasting impact on colleagues and students alike.
Beyond his professional life, Steve found joy in simple pleasures. He cherished spending sunny days by his pool, taking beach vacations, and gardening alongside his loving wife. Known for his generosity and community spirit, Steve prepared his well-known BBQ chicken for fundraisers for a decade and actively supported local charities. As a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #4150, he enjoyed visiting with many friends and playing pull tabs. He was a bit of a lucky charm, often winning contests and games he entered, a fact that never ceased to amaze his family and friends.
Steve was a member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, where he held firm to his faith and served his community with great dedication.
Steve is survived by his wife of 36 years, Rachael Eckard; daughters, Angela Miller (Terry) and Melody Rhinehart; grandchildren, Christopher Miller (Aimee), Brandy Young (John), and Brandon Rhinehart (Brittany); great-grandchildren, Zoe Miller, Coale Young, Ryleigh Miller, and Landon Young; sister, Patricia Carr; numerous nieces, Stephanie Van Meter, Karin Anderson, Valerie Hanson, Cassandra Eckard, Cindy Eckard Wakefield and Christina Eckard Miller; and lifelong best friend, Marvin Shifflett.
He was predeceased by his parents Hubert and Rhoda Eckard; brother, Butch Eckard; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Eckard; and brother-in-law, Norman Carr.
A memorial service will be held on March 12, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, with Rev. Gordon Meriwether officiating. The church is located at 8335 N Valley Pike in Harrisonburg, Virginia. A fellowship meal will be provided following the service.
Steve’s warmth and generosity touched many lives. His memory will continue to bring comfort to those who knew him.
