Bossier City, LA- Catherine M. Brock, beloved mother of her children, Chuck, Timothy “Easy”, Debbie and Joe, passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2011 after a short illness. She was a great friend to many, and her friends and family were a blessing and joy to her. Catherine was born to Charles Edward and Lilly Sophia Wallin McLaughlin on November 27, 1919 in Dixon, MT.
She grew up with her brothers, Jim and “Bud”. Catherine was also known as Aunt Kate and “Taft” by her family. She went to the University of Montana and was a member of the Sigma Kappa Sorority. She was very pleased when she could join her granddaughter, Mary Lou Breedlove, in Mary Lou’s initiation ceremony to Sigma Kappa. During World War II, she joined the Women’s Army Corps, and soon became a Senior Master Sergeant based in Des Moines and Darmstadt, Germany. That is where she met First Lieutenant Walker Jones Brock. Even though she just returned from 48 hour leave in Brussels, she was ordered to attend that evening’s USO dance because they needed female partners for the troops. Walker was tall, very good looking and could dance a beautiful waltz. They dated until she returned to the U.S. and was demobilized. She returned to Dixon and signed up to go back into the WACs. Walker had also been demobilized and drove cross-country from Birmingham, Alabama to Montana to ask her to marry him. Of course, she did. They soon traveled to many different states after “Brock” rejoined the newly formed U.S. Air Force as a C47 or Goonie Bird pilot. They had four children in four states, but after his retirement they came back to Bossier City in 1969. Catherine was happy to be settled, but did miss the moves when she could “really” clean house. Catherine was a talented seamstress, and was a founding member of the “Shady Ladies” of Shady Grove which meets regularly to this day at the Aulds’ Library in Shady Grove Subdivision. She attended the meetings until just last month. She was also a member of the Austin Chapter of the American Sewing Guild where her daughter, Debbie was a member. Catherine loved the creative process of sewing and sewed many clothing and household items for her children.
She will be missed by her family; her older son, Timothy Carl “Easy” Brock and wife Paulette and their children, Mary Lou, Bill, Marty and his oldest son, Steven; her daughter, Deborah Brock Webb; her younger son, Wyatt Joseph Brock and wife Mauri, their children, Clint, Jessica, Jon and Stacy; her oldest son's, Charles Walker, children, Christopher, Caitlyn and Adam. She was so pleased to welcom her beautiful great-grandchildren to this world, Jacob, Logan, Embnry, Liyah, and Athena. Catherine was preceded in death by husband, Walker; her parents; son, Charles “Chuck” Brock; two brothers, James and wife Helen McLaughlin, and Hugh “Bud” McLaughlin.
Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 16, 2011 at Hill Crest Funeral Home, officiating will be Pastor Geoffrey Schmitt. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Hill Crest Memorial Park immediately following the service.
Her family would like to thank Dr. Brady for his considerate care of Catherine, and her many loyal friends who visited in her last days and brought joy and friendship to her.
