Edward George King, Sr. (Ed), 85, of Haughton, LA passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2019.Ed was born in Springfield, LA in the Hungarian Settlement on April 29, 1934. He graduated from Springfield High School where he was a member of the basketball team. He joined the U.S. Air Force and began his military career as an aircraft mechanic. Ed was married to Helen Julia Novak on December 12, 1957, 62 years strong!
During Ed’s military career, he was a crew chief on Vice President Johnson’s airplane in Washington DC/ Maryland. He completed 12 years of active duty and 21 years of active reserve duty. He retired at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.
When Ed left active duty, he worked for Boeing during the Apollo Program. He had the honor of contributing to the historic achievement of Man’s First Lunar Landing in 1969. While at Boeing, he also won an award for contributing a constructive and meritorious idea of eliminating fuel and tank pressure during stage transportation. Ed moved his family in 1972 to Bossier City when he accepted a civil service job at Barksdale Air Force Base.
Ed was a member of First Baptist Church in Haughton and the Masons. He was a past Vice Commander of the Koran American Legion. In his younger days, Ed enjoyed fishing and gardening. He also loved Johnny’s Pizza Buffet with his family.
Ed is survived by his loving wife; Helen King; son, Edward G. King, Jr. (Eddie) and wife Kelly; daughter, Lowana King Daughtry; grandchildren, Trey King and wife Amanda, West King and wife Kim, Amy Jo Daughtry Cotita and husband Ian, and Lindy Kay Daughtry; and great-granddaughter, Noelle. Ed’s greatest love and joy was his children and grandchildren.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents and six siblings.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:30 AM Saturday, January 4, 2020 at First Baptist Church of Haughton with a funeral service following at 10:30 AM. Dr. Gevan Spinney will officiate. Ed will be buried with full military honors at the NWLA Veterans Cemetery at 11:00 AM Monday, January 6, 2020.
