Mrs. Elfriede Kaspar Mahaffey, aged 92, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2022. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 3 at 11:00 am at Hillcrest Memorial Funeral Home followed by a private graveside service, with Dr. Kenny Joyner presiding. The family will receive visitors beginning at 10:00 am prior to the funeral.
Elfriede was born in Montana to German parents on September 9, 1929, and spent her youth and teenage years in Munich, Germany. Shortly after WWII, she met her future husband, United States Army soldier Claude Mahaffey, in Munich. She made the long journey to the United States alone on a ship to live with Claude’s family in Florien, Louisiana. They were married upon his return on July 4, 1947. The couple was blessed with three daughters and two sons and eventually settled in Bossier City, Louisiana. After raising five children, she attended nursing school but found her true calling working with infants at the Wee Center at First Baptist Church, Bossier City. She loved those babies as her own and gently guided countless new mothers, many of whom remember her care and sweet demeanor.
Affectionately known as Frida, Momma, Grandma, Oma, GG, and Ms. Daisy, Elfriede had a kind, optimistic, and nurturing spirit. She loved music and could always be heard humming her way through her day. She also played the accordion, much to the delight of her grandchildren. Elfriede enjoyed nature, gardening with Claude, and tending to her roses. Her greatest joy was spending time with her large family, making each and every child, grandchild, great-grand, and their spouses feel adored and special.
Elfriede was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Claude Mahaffey; her parents Konradina and Ludwig Kaspar; five brothers, Eugene, Walter, Pete, Jimmy, and Robert; Son-In-Law Wilton Chance, and Daughter-In-Law Gina Mahaffey. She is survived by her brother Ludwig Kaspar; five children, Diana Chance, Dan Mahaffey (Sonya), Eva Chappell (David), Iris Boone (Bobby), and Dennis Mahaffey; eleven grandchildren, Christopher Chance (Mary), Kimberly Pizarro (Antonio), Jason Boone (Ashley), Ryan Putch (Alla), Michael Mahaffey, Patrick Mahaffey (Heather), Justin Boone (Aimee), Angela Putch, Brigitte Hawsey (Brian), Erica Lambert (Beau), Anna Mahaffey, and 17 great-grandchildren.
