Dear Mrs. Guffey, Glenn and Teresa...we are so saddened to hear about the passing of Mr. Guffey.  We have been blessed to have known him and shared a few boxes of candy and chocolates with him.  We have nothing but fond memories of him and the good times and laughter we've shared.  We will sorely miss him.

I find myself speechless at the loss of Mr. Guffey.   Words cannot express how I feel learning of his death.  Memories fill my head as I think back on the many years of growing up next door to the family.  May God bless the family with healing as they go through this time of grief.

Mr. Guffey was a special person to have for a next-door neighbor.  His sense of humor, positive attitude and self-confidence were exemplary.  I remember tasting my very first Dr Pepper at his The Shaggy Dog burger stand back in the day over on Northside Drive.

He loved all the kids in the neighborhood.  He gave them names like Red, Snowball, Tater, Mad-Dog etc.  He saved my brother, Cary(Snowball), and me a lot of personal injury by intervening on our go-kart building.  I recall him sharing his philosophy on efficient lawn mowing techniques.  I still apply his advice whenever I mow my lawn.

He used to say that I talked too much.  But as I reflect on his well-lived life, I can only reply â€œNo sir, I can't say enoughâ€.

Good by Mr. Guffy, Your stories of  WW2 adventures in China has stayed with me all these years. To Glenn and his family i still think of you often and miss for the simpler days back on Bruce St..

We are so sorry to hear about Jim, my husband Stan Johnson was one of his dearest friends and my husband is in the Promise Hospital after'having open heart surgery and a stroke.  We will always remember \jim for his wonderful attitude and personality and most of all for being such a wonderful friend to our family.  WE WILL MISS YOU JIM

I can not begin to express my feelings over the loss of Mr. Guffey.  There are far too many memories in my life that include him.  He always had a welcome smile and could make me laugh.  He was a light in our neighborhood!  If there is anything I can do, please let me know.  I want to be there for you as he was always there for me!

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another. 
 
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to  James D. Guffey our “Brother-in-Arms”.   To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for James.   And to James it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II while serving as a fighter pilot with the Flying Tigers in the U.S. Army Air Corps.  James, we bid you a sad farewell.  You will be dearly missed from among our ranks.  Be at Ease.  Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,341 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion,  I extend our sympathies and our condolences to James’ family and loved ones.
