Janis Hatten Harrison—affectionately known as GrandJan—found peace on December 29, 2025.
During the 75 years she walked this earth, Janis touched countless lives with her sharp wit, unforgettable humor, stubborn determination, and an adventurous spirit that was impossible to resist. She lived boldly, loved deeply, and collected people wherever life carried her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ethel and M. Dale Hatten, and her beloved husband, Donald Ray Harrison.
She is survived by her daughters, Angela Harrison Vinet and her husband Robert, and Elizabeth Harrison Clack Freeman and her husband James; and by her cherished grandchildren, Ethan Clack, Julien Vinet, William (Will) Vinet, Caroline Clack, and Christian Vinet, who were the joy of her life and the center of her world.
She is also survived by her brothers: Steven Hatten and his wife Bonnie; Tommy Hatten and his wife Robin; Don Hatten and his wife Linda; and Joe Hatten and his wife Nanette; as well as numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Janis began her professional life as a nurse, but her soul was always that of an artist. She became a gifted potter, painted, sketched, and left behind a remarkable body of artwork that reflects her creativity.
Janis taught herself how to drive a camper and set off alone to see America. She crisscrossed the country, eventually visiting every continental U.S. national park. She found deep joy in the open road and formed lifelong friendships within her camper community across the nation.
Janis always traveled with her washboard—just in case someone might invite her to play. For a brief and joyful time, she even joined a jug band in the desert.
She loved birds and shared deep friendships with fellow birders, carefully building an extensive life list over the years.
Her life leaves behind a legacy—and a challenge—to those who loved her: say yes to adventure, never take today for granted, and do the things that bring you joy.
GrandJan lived free, lived fully, and showed us all how beautiful a life can be when lived without fear.
Here’s to GrandJan on her final journey, because she is now “On the Road Again” — Willie Nelson.
