Sargent John Lewis (70) of Benton, Louisiana passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2024. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on September 24, 1953. John was a graduate of Fair Park High School in Shreveport, Louisiana. He married Melissa Mainelli on December 30, 1982, and they were married until she passed away in 2023. John had a distinguished career in Public Service with the Bossier City Police Department (BCPD) for twenty-five years. His life was focused on his family and friends, his work with the BCPD, coaching the Battle Wings, Bruce’s Softball Team, and being a member of the Iron Spartan’s Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club.
John ensured his family came first and always supported his family's dreams. John and Melissa made each other better and encouraged each other through thick and thin during their lives. John loved food and that love can be seen in years of pictures from his travels to New Orleans for Beignets, Dallas Hard 8 BBQ for Texas BBQ, and the Hard Rock Café in Biloxi. Despite being a die-hard Saints fan, he always cherished attending Cowboys games with Tyler, while wearing his Saints attire. When Alysia came into the family, John and Melissa supported her and he became the father figure she never had before, ensuring that she felt loved. The Lewis family continues to grow with grandson Tristan and soon-to-arrive grandson Zander. John will always be remembered as a passionate, loving, supportive, tells-it-like-it-is, and “always had your back” Husband, Father, and Pop-Pop.
He found his dream job later in life with the Bossier City Police Department. On night shift meetings, he would always be the one who made the staff laugh and relax before the start of a shift. The group he created during his time at the BCPD was a close-knit family. His BCPD family referred to him as the “Bull” because of his crazy, embellished stories that made everyone wonder if they were true. He will be remembered as the brother in blue who would be there for you on a duty call and always had your back.
Coaching the Battle Wings was not just a passion for John, but a way of life. He was an athlete who always wanted to be an integral part of the sport. Once playing a sport was no longer realistic, coaching allowed him to participate through the eyes of his players. John was viewed as the soul of the team, who came with great stories and a deep love of the game. Money was never the driving force for this passion but John’s real passion was for the success of his coaches and players. Remembered as an athlete, he was knowledgeable, organized, and always strived for the success of his teams.
Bruce’s Softball Team was the embodiment of a true family dynamic. John’s vision for Bruce’s Softball shaped a team that celebrated their wins and looked at their losses as an opportunity for growth. John was viewed as the face of the team and as a true leader who could perform well on the mound under pressure. He knew that a game could not be won by one person and his ability to unite everyone was how Bruce’s Softball was able to withstand the test of time. This team was unique and in John’s true fashion, it became a family with an unbreakable bond even to this day. His fellow teammates remember him as being a leader who was humble, strong, and always held others accountable.
Iron Spartan’s Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club awakened his passion for travel on the open road. John was a true believer in the Victory brand motorcycles. He rode the “tail of the dragon” known as the Motorcycle Mecca, which included over 318 turns across 11 miles at Deals Gap in Tennessee. Another personal favorite ride of his was the Three Twisted Sisters located in the Texas Hill Country. John’s fellow riders remember him as being tough, strong, and unfiltered; but kind and genuine.
John is survived by his son John Tyler Lewis, daughter-in-law Alysia Allyn Lewis, and grandson Tristan Allen Lewis.
