Muoi was born on January 28, 1947 in China to Huy Lam and Dat Hua. She grew up in Saigon, Vietnam where she was valedictorian of her high school. After marrying and having children, she and her husband left Saigon in 1978 to start a new life in America following the Vietnam War. From Saigon, her family transitioned into a refugee camp on an island in Malaysia for a year before settling in Shreveport, Louisiana. Starting this new life meant she often had to work several jobs to support her family. She had a passion for cooking and baking which led to careers in local restaurants such as East Ridge Country Club, Kon Tiki, and Monsieur Patou. Her last occupation was as a nanny for two families.
Muoi loved spending time with her family and would often prepare feasts for frequent family get-togethers. No one ever left hungry. Food was her love language. When you tasted her cooking, you felt the love she poured into it. It was impossible to duplicate her recipes. She loved planting herbs, fruits, and vegetables in the garden. She even found joy in the mundane things like grocery shopping.
Muoi was preceded in death by her parents and her only brother, That Lam. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Trung Kha and six children: Linh Johnson and her husband, Bill; Anh Kha and her partner, Pete; Dao Flaherty and her husband, Wheeler; Nguyen Kha; Lien Matriano-Lim and her husband, Bob; and Christy Stayer and her husband, Tom. She is also survived by her four grandchildren: Justin Johnson and his wife, Stephanie; Ryan Johnson and his partner, Whitney; Owen Stayer; and Olivia Stayer.
The family would like to give a special thanks to St. Joseph Hospice for their care and support during this difficult time. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, October 11, 2021 at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home and Park in Haughton, Louisiana.
