Bossier City, LA- Services for the life of CMSGT Paul Clayton Carl, age 85, will be held at 1:00 p.m. at Hill Crest Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, April 16, 2011, Msgr. Earl V. Provenza officiating, interment immediately following with full military honors. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Paul passed away peacefully during the morning of Friday, April 8, 2011.
Mr. Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Doris A. Carl; son, John Harris Carl; parents, Paul John and Jacque Carl of Lakewood, OH; and brothers, Philip, Donald, and David Carl.
He is survived by daughters, Karen Lee Martin and husband Rob of Bullard, TX, Nancy Anne Franklyn of Murfreesboro, TN; grandchildren, Rebekah Martin Widmer and husband Trent of Coppell, TX, Matthew John Martin and wife Jess of Caldwell, TX, Garett Paul Franklyn of Murfreesboro, TN, Jacob Brian Martin and fiancée Melissa Chamness of College Station, TX, Lindsey Anne Franklyn of Nashville, TN, and Joshua Aaron Martin of Bullard, TX; and great-grandson, Cooper Dietrich Martin of Caldwell, TX; as well as many special sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends.
Paul was born March 20, 1926 in Lakewood OH. He enlisted in the Army Aircorp on June 17, 1943 and served in WWII in Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe participating in the Battle of the Bulge as an explosives expert. He also worked on the Nuremburg Trials while in Germany. After WWII, he reenlisted with the U.S. Air Force where he was stationed at Scott AFB, Belleville, IL where he was assigned as a Dental Tech at the 3310th Air Force. After assignments in Iceland and at Davis-Monthan AFB, Tucson, AZ, he was stationed at Barksdale, AFB, Bossier City, LA with the 855th Medical Group SAC as a Dental Superintendent. He retired July 31, 1967 as a Chief Master Sargent.
Paul proudly served his country and received the following decorations and awards; American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Meritorious Medal, USAF Small Arms Expert, USAF Commendations Medal, and Three Bronze Star Service Medals.Upon his retirement he began working for Schumpert Memorial Hospital, Shreveport, LA as Director of Housekeeping and then later with LSPD as a police officer assigned to LSU Hospital in Shreveport, LA, until final retirement.
He was an active member of Mary Queen of Peace and Christ the King Catholic Churches were he served on the Parish Council and participated in numerous fundraisers with Msgr. Provenza. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. His hobbies included cooking, reading, crossword puzzles, traveling, and writing.
His family wishes to thank the staff at Middle Tennessee Medical Center for their compassionate care and Dr. Daniel Moller, life-long friend and personal physician.
Pallbearers will be; Rob Martin, Matthew J. Martin, Garett P. Franklyn, Jacob B. Martin, Joshua A. Martin, and Trent Widmer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation or the Spinal Cord Research Foundation.
