I am thinking about my grandfather this Memorial Day and his service to our nation during the difficulty with the Republic of Korea, or the ROK, as we say in Foggy Bottom.

I want to thank all of the folks that were so kind to share their memories of Benjamin, which I was only recently able to process and appreciate.

I’m so sorry to hear of Ben’s passing. I covered assignments for him with Black Star for 20 years. We never met in person, but I always enjoyed the quick chats with him.

I feel like I just spoke to Ben. We had the longest conversation full of memories and laughs. We connected once a year.  I'm sad that I let so much time pass without talking to him again. I will never forget the first time i met Ben at Black Star. We worked hard but he made working  there fun. Ben was a good guy and fair. I was making out a mailing list when something told me to google his name. and there was his obituary.  I sent him a photo of many of the Black Star staff . That was the last time I spoke to him. 

Remembering the laughs, the good times and  Black Star and Ben. Wil miss him!

I was an employee at Black Star from 1997 to 2000 and am sorry to hear of Ben’s passing. I learned much about the photo industry from him and he’s remained one of the most memorable of photo agents I’ve reported to. He was a legend and will be dearly missed.

Ben was my first boss. I have so many great memories of working with him at Black Star. We had the best staff and great times at Black Star. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. I will miss him and remember how good he was to me. Forever in my heart.

Last week, I thought I should send a note to Ben reminding him of a memory we shared many years ago. Most don’t know that Ben had majored in history in college. My best friend and fellow Black Star photographer Brian Payne had told me and I had just returned from a trip to Arkansas on a photo assignment. I had sent an expense statement to Ben and included a note by phone asking him.  “Where was the Civil War Battle of Pea Ridge fought and who won? “Within five minutes Ben was on the phone asking me how I knew that fact. I always cherished that memory. I only learned of Ben’s passing today. I cherish our 50 + year friendship and working relationship.


Fred valued Ben's friendship, judgment, integrity, and steady association over many years with Black Star. I celebrate the many memories I keep of Ben in the high days of photojournalism. Mutual deep appreciation and cooperation imbued our personal and professional communications over the decades since the early 1960s. I send love to the family. Charlotte Ward

Ben, was one of my best friends,  He was my agent for more than 55 years and we always talked to each other as brothers. I am just hearing about his passing.   I would have appreciated someone telling me before this. I'll bet Ben  would have too.  Dennis Brack,Black Star
