Dear Ramos Family,

The first time I heard Hilario speak he was a pony-tailed 18-year-old holding forth on Alice Walker's Temple of My Familiar and its relation to "lo real maravilloso." I had no idea what that was or how I could hang on, but I was too exhilirated to care. Even more stirring and vital, it turned out, was being able to call Hilario a friend. I have had few intellectual achievements greater than telling a joke and having his face seize in beaming recognition of my whole meaning (and of even more he could then exultantly elaborate).

The last time I spoke to Hilario he was as warm, insightful, and delighted to hear about my life and work as he was telling me about his life with Deborah and his boys. Which is to say, as one always could with Hilario, he was thoroughly vibrant and an irrepressible spark of life. My grief upon hearing of his passing is disorienting and wrenching. Across distances of years and place he has remained for me a thrill to have met and a gift to have known. He was so very real and marvelous. 

May his memory be for a blessing.

To the Family of Hilario Ramos,

It is with the greatest sorrow that I received the news of Hilario’s untimely passing. My sympathies to his wife and children and to his brother, Alex. Hilario’s mother was a dear friend of mine in Mexico, where I knew Hilario and Alex from the time they were young boys until they went to college in the U.S. and began their professional careers there. They were always brilliant students, hard workers, loyal to family and friends alike,  as well as very enjoyable company. I would greatly appreciate it if Alex would send me a message to the above e-mail with information on how I might communicate with him.  Thank you.  Condolences. 

Dear Ramos family,

We were so sorry to hear of Hilario's loss.  Having worked with Hilario for a number of years, he always faced our work together with a sense of humor as well as diligence and practicality.  However, I was always struck most noticeably by his dedication to his family. He spoke often of his great pride in his family and especially his children, and it was so clear how much joy his family brought him. Our condolences on your loss and our thoughts are with you.

Dear Deborah, Antonio and Nicholas,
I'm deeply saddened by the loss of my dear friend Hilario. I met him in high school and only got to see him a handful of times after that, but his was one of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Hilario was intimidatingly smart but those of us who knew him well understand how warm, loyal and generous he was. When we reconnected as adults I saw that same generosity--so many of the messages I have from him over the past few years were about checking in on old friends he was concerned about or colleagues whose careers he wanted to help advance. He was so happy to be a father and a husband and told me so much about the three of you.

Our deepest sympathies to your family.  I was fortunate to collaborate with Hilario on one of the PTA Council committees this past year. Hilario was  kind, humble and empathetic in working with all of us.  He will be missed.

My deepest sympathies to the Ramos family. This is heartbreaking. Hilario was an incredibly kind, honest, hard working individual. He was always a voice of reason in our community. He was always there to advocate for the children in our schools. I shall miss him tremendously.
