Just simply the smartest, kindest man I ever met.

Lester, I will always remember you as the smartest person I ever met.  You are deeply missed.

"Doctor Les" defined a good Jew as an outstanding person who shared his values of love, respect and kindness with all the people he met.  Working with Dr. Les at Norden Systems for many years I can truly say he was a role model for all who worked with him.
Doctor Lester Kosowsky - We will always remember him as a man who truly loved his God, his family and his work.

Dear Bernice and Family,

It brought us great sadness to learn of the passing of your beloved husband and father.  

Lester was a serious, devoted, and sincere individual who always stood by his principles—and yet he maintained a great sense of humor. He attended every minyan and every class. He was a genuine m’vakeish—one who was seeking the truth.

I recall that he was on the search committee that interviewed and ultimately hired me as the rabbi of YI of Stamford (37 years ago!).  I will never forget the whimsical and puzzling look on his face when he asked: “It says on your resume that you received your BA in 3 1/2 years and then your MA less than a year later—while already being in semicha! Something here doesn’t make sense—how did you do all this in that amount time? “  He would frequently remind me of this and add:  “It still doesn’t make sense!”

He loved his family—and, of course—took tremendous pride in the accomplishments of his wonderful children, be it in Seth’s running the service and leining or the many shailos the girls would ask. I remember, in particular, when Toby and Cindy asked me if they could shower on the three day Yom Tov of Shavuos when the heat was sweltering and everyone’s hair became oily and disgusting.  I truly do not know how I answered at the time, but part of their argument was that I could simply put the tallis over my head and had a hat/yarmulka to hide my hair, but they were not married and couldn’t cover their hair!  He loved that one (in Cincinnati I was lenient with my daughters and for myself!).  Alyssa, you were just an adorable youngster then—I got no trouble from you!

I am glad that Lester lived a long and meaningful life, seeing “banim ub’nai banim” and beyond in the flourishing Kosowsky family.

We still hope to see you all one day at a simcha. Won’t that be incredible!

I had the good fortune of meeting and knowing Lester for the past several months working on a project together with my students at Penn State University. We really appreciated and benefitted from his sharp scientific and technical intellect. May his soul Rest in Peace and may God give his family and friends the strength and fortitude to bear his loss.

I remember Lester davening next to my brother at Agudath Shalom Synagogue while his little daughters giggled in the row behind me.  Fifty years ago and I remember it like yesterday.

Lester was a brilliant, devout and kind man.  He made my parents week by calling to wish them a good shabbos.  After my parents passed, Lester would then call me on Fridays to wish me a good shabbos.   He was very thoughtful and will be greatly missed.
