Professor Goodfriend was one of the most principled people I’ve ever met. Going to talk to him before class on a weekly basis turned into an event and a lesson in not just economics but history, politics, literature, and life. I’m honored to have had him as a professor but even more honored to call him a friend. My deepest sympathies to all who were close to him. He was truly a great man, and he left an indelible mark on my life for which I’m forever grateful. 

I've known Marvin pretty much my whole life.
Here are two of my favorite memories.

He was out first visitor after we moved to Heidelberg. He was in Frankfurt to speak at a conference about the upcoming Euro introduction. Marvin told us that his father had studied medecine at the Universität Heidelberg  - perhaps one of the last graduating classes before the war. He got to walk those same streets in the student sector, and we got some different insights into our adopted city.

Later we were in DC with friends, so visited him in Richmond. 
Oliver noticed one of Marvin's guitars. Marvin handed it to him, and they just started strumming. It quickly turned a beautiful impromptu concert when Oliver's two young daughters started to sing along. Is so moved by his ability to draw people in through music... In this case, people he had only just met.
It was a magical moment that I often think about.

We'll miss you, Marvin!

I had the pleasure of knowing Marvin when he worked at the Fed in Richmond. My condolences to his family and may your memories provide you with some peace and comfort in the days ahead. He was a true gentleman and scholar. 


Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. Dr Goodfriend was my professor of Macroeconomics when I attended the Tepper School of Business MBA program. We stayed in touch ever since I graduated 10 years ago and if it wasn't for his mastery of economics and unwavering availability, I would not be where I am today. I now work for the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world in exactly the field of study he so passionately taught. I hence owe my career to him and it is with great sorrow that I received the news of his passing. I will forever cherish the memories of an amazing professor and a great man.
