William I. Friedman, born December 29, 1923 in Mount Vernon, New York to Henry and Tillie Friedman passed away peacefully on December 14th, 2019 two weeks prior to his 96th birthday. Known by many friends and family as Billy, he was with his devoted wife Anne at the time of death in their home at the Atria in Rye Brook, NY.
Bill was most proud of having bravely served his country during World War II. He fought in the Ninth Army’s 102nd infantry division throughout Holland, Belgium and Germany after landing in Cherbourg during the invasion of Normandy. Besides three Bronze Stars and numerous other medals, Bill was awarded a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French Government in 2013 at a ceremony in New York City.
More important than his courage in war was his dedication to his family. He leaves behind his wife Anne (née Brodkin) of 65 years; sons Kenneth and Mark, their spouses Katherine (Hess) and Susan (Richman); grandchildren Michael (fiancée Renée), Richard, Nicholas, Chloe and Steven; and eight adoring nieces and nephews. Brothers Herbert and Alvin are previously deceased.
